Routing the SSL 18 and dbx for Analog Warmth and Outboard Processing

 

The hybrid setup: bringing outboard analog processing directly into the digital workspace.

 

 In the modern studio, the debate between "in-the-box" and analog outboard gear is over: the best answer is usually a hybrid of both. Setting up a seamless workflow between your

interface, outboard processors, and DAW is critical for capturing clean, dynamic takes while leaving room for creative routing later. Here is a look at the current studio routing using the SSL 18 and a dbx dynamics processor, running, directly into FL Studio and Reaper.

 Channel 1: The Front-End Vocal Chain

 When working with a dynamic microphone, getting the gain staging and initial EQ right on the way in saves hours of mixing later. Dynamic mics are notoriously gain-hungry and can sometimes sound a bit dark, which is where this specific routing chain shines. 

 

The Routing Path:

• Dynamic Mic dbx Channel 1 (Input)

• dbx Channel 1 (Output) SSL Channel (Input)

 

At the SSL interface stage, the settings are where the magic happens. Engaging three specific switches on

this channel ensures the cleanest capture:

 

Line: Because the signal is coming out of the dbx, it has             already been amplified to a line-level signal.

Engaging the 'Line' switch bypasses the SSL's microphone preamp stage, preventing impedance

mismatches and unwanted distortion.

 

High Pass (HPF): This immediately rolls off the low-end rumble—like AC hum, mic stand vibrations,

or heavy plosives—before the signal ever hits the analog-to-      digital converters.

4K Switch: This is the secret weapon for dynamic mics. The 4K circuit introduces a subtle high-

frequency EQ boost and some finely tuned harmonic distortion. It breathes life and presence into the

raw signal.

 From there, the signal hits the DAW crisp, controlled, and ready for mixing

 

Channel 2: The Open Outboard Insert

 While Channel 1 is locked in for tracking, Channel 2 on the dbx is deliberately left open to serve as a

hardware insert during the mixing phase. Instead of just tracking through the dbx, this routing turns thecompressor into an external plugin that can be manipulated inside the software.

The Routing Path:

DAW Output (Hardware Send) SSL Line Out dbx Channel 2 (Input)

dbx Channel 2 (Output) SSL Line In DAW (Hardware Return)

 

The FX Loop: The dry signal is sent out of the SSL from the back outputs, processed through the outboard gear,

and returned via the line inputs (red and blue FX markings) to be recorded in real-time.

By setting this up as a mono effects track in the DAW, the possibilities open up drastically. You can send

any recorded signal out of the computer, run it through the physical circuitry of the dbx, and record it back

in real-time.

This is incredibly useful for:

Mid/Side Processing: Sending just the "mid" (center) information of a drum bus or vocal through the

dbx to anchor the track, or heavily compressing the "sides" to widen the stereo image.

Parallel Compression: Smashing a mono drum room mic or bass DI through the dbx and blending it

subtly underneath the uncompressed track.

The Takeaway

Taking the time to hardwire a hybrid setup removes the friction from the creative process. You get the

immediate analog warmth on the way in with Channel 1, and the flexible outboard processing power on

the mixdown with Channel 2.

A clean workspace translates to a clean workflow.
